DON'T TRUST THE GROUND

“You look around and start to expect you might not exist... And so you sit. You sit still. Because your limbs are so heavy. They are full of rain.”

Don't trust the ground is UGLYBIRD'S premier piece, developed from an article extract written by Caitlin Moran in Moranthology (p.223), the piece threads intimate moments of story telling with fast paced physicality exploring the limitations and boundaries forced by repression and hope. Featuring music by Luisine, Thomas Newman, Chromatics, Clint Mansell and UNKLE, lighting design by Paul Joines. The piece has been choreographed by Emily Dobson in collaboration with the dancers.

Thoughts from the performers.

LUCY: “Working with Uglybird Company and choreographer Emily Dobson has widened my skills and knowledge into becoming a professional dancer. The piece Don’t Trust The Ground, pushed me technically and physically however was exciting and allowed me to focus on myself as an individual as well as part of a team.”

GRACE: “For me the piece is an accumulation of the five performers.  It says a lot about us as individuals, and gives us a chance to get stuck into to some meaty movement content, exploring a lot of dynamics and our range as a performer. Its also a mental and physical piece, you cant just switch off, which is something I really enjoy.”

DEBBIE:“To me, Don’t Trust the Ground is an opportunity to put into practice all the ideas and skills I have developed as a performer, both in regards to technique and to my own performance presence. It’s an opportunity to push myself physically and emotionally, as I challenge myself to bring my whole self into performance.”

BEBEE: “Working with Uglybird has been a valuable experience for me in the sense that it has given me greater insight into what it means to be part of a professional dance company. Working closely with our choreographer Emily, has allowed me to refine my performance style and stage presence, in a sense I have a greater understanding of who I am as a performer.”

JESS LOBB: “It has been fantastic working with Emily Dobson, and some of my closest friends and fellow dancers, to create 'Don't Trust The Ground'. The elements of the piece are exciting and at times touching and I have enjoyed being able to explore my individuality within the choreography.”
